On April 23, 2025, the Supreme Court of Liberia issued a definitive ruling affirming that actions taken by the self-proclaimed “Majority Bloc,” led by Representative Richard Koon, were unconstitutional. The Court declared that any legislative sessions or decisions not in alignment with Articles 33 and 49 of the Liberian Constitution are ultra vires—beyond legal authority—and therefore invalid.
Despite this clear judgment, the Majority Bloc has chosen to defy the Court’s authority, vowing to continue holding separate sessions and asserting legitimacy where none exists. Their actions not only undermine the rule of law but also threatened the very foundations of Liberia’s democratic governance.
The Supreme Court serves as the ultimate arbiter of constitutional interpretation in Liberia. Its decisions are binding and must be respected to maintain the balance of power among the branches of government. The Majority Bloc’s refusal to comply with the Court’s ruling represents a dangerous precedent, suggesting that elected officials can choose which laws to follow based on political convenience.
Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, affirmed by the Court as the legitimate Speaker, has extended an olive branch, urging his colleagues to resume regular legislative activities and work collaboratively for the benefit of the Liberian people.
In light of these developments, DN News Liberia calls upon the Majority Bloc to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling unequivocally. Adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law is not optional—it is the bedrock of our democracy. The path forward requires unity, respect for legal institutions, and a collective commitment to the principles that govern our nation.
Liberia’s democratic integrity depends on the actions of its leaders. The Majority Bloc must choose to uphold the law, respect the judiciary, and work within the constitutional framework to address any grievances. Only through such adherence can we ensure a stable and prosperous future for all Liberians.
