President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has signed into law the 2025 Liberia National Tourism Act, a milestone move aimed at making tourism a major driver of economic growth, job creation, and foreign investment in the country.
The legislation formally establishes the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) as the principal government agency charged with promoting, encouraging, and regulating the tourism sector.
It amends Title 30 of the Public Authorities Law of the Liberian Codes of Law Revised, giving the Authority a clear mandate to develop tourism as a key socio-economic activity, generate foreign exchange and employment opportunities, extend tourism benefits across both the public and private sectors, and serve as the chief regulatory body for tourism in Liberia.
In keeping with Chapter 5, Section 5.1 of the Act, President Boakai has appointed the first group of statutory and presidentially selected board members to guide the transition and formal operations of the Authority.
The statutory members include the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice, and Internal Affairs, as well as a representative of the Liberia Chamber of Commerce.
The Minister of Information has been appointed as a presidential option member, while Mr. Christopher Hayes Onanuga, the Presidential Special Envoy on Tourism, will also serve on the board.
President Boakai described the creation of the LNTA as a clear demonstration of his administration’s commitment to harness Liberia’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and natural resources to attract international visitors, stimulate domestic business growth, and create sustainable livelihoods.
With the law now in effect, the Liberia National Tourism Authority is expected to immediately begin implementing programs to market the country as a vibrant and competitive destination.
The Authority will work in close collaboration with both public institutions and private sector stakeholders to position Liberia as a hub for cultural, ecological, and adventure tourism, while fostering economic opportunities for communities across the nation.
