Kakata, Margibi County — A viral social media video showing a man being confronted by a group of individuals during an alleged same-sex meeting has drawn public attention in Kakata, Margibi County and across Liberia. The incident, described by reports, as a “private meeting that turned into a public confrontation,” reportedly occurred at a residence in the city.
According to reports, the man had allegedly been exchanging romantic messages with another individual identified as a resident of the Bassa Community in Kakata. The two reportedly arranged to meet at a house belonging to the latter to spend some private time together. However, what was expected to be a “private rendezvous” allegedly took an unexpected turn when the visitor arrived at the residence.
Reports indicate that the individual who arranged the meeting had allegedly informed some of his friends about the planned encounter, with the group reportedly waiting at the residence before confronting the visitor. The situation has been described as an “unexpected ambush,” although the exact circumstances surrounding the group’s involvement and the reasons for the confrontation remain unclear. Their identities remain unclear.
Meanwhile, claims circulating on social media have suggested that the man is a teacher and pastor, although neither his professional background nor religious affiliation has been independently verified. It is also unclear whether the confrontation resulted in physical injuries, whether a formal complaint has been filed with the Liberia National Police, or whether authorities have initiated an investigation. Up to date, this outlet has not seen a public update from authorities.
Same-sex sexual activity remains strictly criminalized in Liberia under the country’s Penal Law, which classifies such acts as “voluntary sodomy” and carries penalties of up to three years in prison. LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face severe social stigma, systemic discrimination, and frequent political pressure from lawmakers seeking to pass even stricter anti-homosexuality legislation.
